DUPUY SINCE 1852
Born in Jarnac in 1825, Auguste Dupuy showed his attachment to the Cognac region at an early age. He loved cycling through the valleys of the Grande Champagne and Fins Bois vineyards, winding their way around the town of Jarnac, one of the centres of the cognac trade.
As soon as he finished his law and economics studies and returned from a long trip around the world, during which he was able to appreciate the prestige of the French “art de vivre”, he decided to set up his own trading house so that he could fulfil his most cherished dream: to put his stamp and his name on a bottle of cognac, the noble spirit that Auguste had fallen in love with.
That same year he married Simone de Falquier, who gave him a son, Gaston. Gaston turned out to be a unique character, a dandy who enjoyed entertaining at his château in Jarnac, but had little interest in the development of his father Auguste’s business. Auguste decided to leave the business to his nephew Edmond, so that the Dupuy family could continue his work. When Auguste handed over the keys of his cognac house to his nephew, he gave him one piece of advice: to place the oldest and most precious eaux-de-vie in a special cellar, the Chai Paradis.
Since then, the House’s rarest eaux-de-vie, those which today form the prestigious basis of the AUGUSTE blend, have always been kept in this special cellar.
In 1905, Edmond, who had no descendants to leave his Cognac House to, decided to sell it to Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen. Since then, the Bache-Gabrielsen family has perpetuated “L’Art du Cognac” of Auguste and Edmond Dupuy from generation to generation, drawing on their heritage and vision to ensure that the prestige of the House continues.
